Twelve

Chuck stood beside the brigadier. In the half-light, neither of them looked happy.

I said, “Why? They were planning on killing me last night. As far as they’re concerned, I’m dead.”

A small breeze rustled the leaves and made me shudder. The brigadier shook his head. “Until they discover, in the next hour or two, that you and Rosario have disappeared. They’ll start shutting down the operation, and the big prizes will be on the next air taxi back to the United States.”

“No.” It was my turn to shake my head. “These guys are not stupid. They will deduce correctly that the first thing Rosario is going to do is come for her dad. And they will do two things. They will phone to see if she has come, and they will send a car after us. They will all four be aware of one, overriding factor. As long as I am loose, they cannot go back to the States. I make the facts available to an American federal prosecutor, and they are fucked six ways to Sunday. But as long as they are south of the border, they have corruption and their vast wealth on their side.”

He grunted. Chuck looked down at him and frowned. “It makes sense, sir.”

“All right,” he said, “but everything hinges on how we handle this part of the operation. What are you thinking?”

I took five minutes to tell him. He nodded, and we all went and got in the Merc, then did a U-turn and pulled up in front of the gate. There I turned to Rosario.

“We are going to get out and buzz reception. We are here on behalf on Nelson McCormack and Nigel Hunt -”

“They will call to confirm.”

“Not at this time of the morning, they won’t. And even if they try, they won’t get through.” She hesitated, and I pressed her. “It’s the one play we’ve got. Stop wasting time.”

I got out, and she came after me. I heard the two rear doors slam and knew the brigadier and Chuck were with us. We approached the gate, and she pressed the button on the intercom. After a moment, an image of Rosario and me with two indistinct figures behind us appeared on the small, slightly warped silver screen. A voice crackled, “Si? Quien es?”

“Venimos de parte de Nelson McCormack y Nigel Hunt, para ver a un paciente. Es urgente.”

She turned to me. “He asks who we are. I said we come on behalf of Nelson and Nigel to see a patient. It is urgent.”

There was a delay of maybe thirty seconds that felt more like an hour. Then the gate buzzed and began to roll slowly back. Rosario and I pushed inside with the brigadier just behind us. Chuck climbed back in the car and followed us up the drive to the main door.

It was a large, rectangular, Spanish colonial building in sage green and white. Three shallow steps rose to the main entrance. I ran up these with Rosario and the brigadier on my heels.
